Dealing with a toothache can be incredibly uncomfortable and disruptive. While it’s important to seek professional dental care for a thorough evaluation and treatment, there are some things that you can do at home to help alleviate pain and inflammation to provide temporary relief from toothache discomfort. Continue reading to learn about 10 effective home remedies to ease toothache symptoms.

#1: Salt Water

Create a soothing saltwater rinse by combining half a teaspoon of salt with eight ounces of warm water. Gargle with this mixture to eliminate bacteria and minimize the risk of infection. This simple remedy can also reduce inflammation, dislodge food particles, promote oral wound healing, and provide pain relief.

#2: Cold Compress

Apply a cold compress to the affected area of your cheek to reduce inflammation. The cold temperature constricts blood vessels, effectively reducing swelling and providing relief.

#3: Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse

Create a homemade mouthwash by combining equal parts of water and 3% hydrogen peroxide. Gargle with this solution to effectively eliminate bacteria, minimize plaque accumulation, alleviate pain and inflammation, and promote healing of bleeding gums.

#4: Garlic

Prepare a paste by crushing a garlic clove, then apply it to the affected tooth and chew slowly. This natural remedy helps alleviate pain and eliminates harmful oral bacteria.

#5: Guava Leaves

Boil crushed guava leaves in water to create a mouthwash or chew on fresh leaves. These leaves possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, aiding in wound healing and providing relief.

#6: Wheatgrass

Utilize wheatgrass as a mouthwash or consume it to combat bacteria, reduce inflammation, and enhance your immune system.

#7: Peppermint Tea Bags

Allow a cooled, used peppermint tea bag to rest on the affected tooth to provide relief for sensitive gums and alleviate pain.

#8: Clove

Create a clove oil solution by mixing 15 drops of clove oil with one ounce of a carrier oil, such as jojoba or sunflower. Apply a small amount of this mixture on a cotton ball and gently place it on the affected tooth a few times a day. Alternatively, add a drop of clove oil to a glass of water to create a soothing mouthwash.

#9: Thyme

Harness the antibacterial power of thyme by combining thyme essential oil with a carrier oil and applying it to the affected tooth. Alternatively, add a drop of thyme essential oil to a small glass of water and use it as a gargle to promote oral health. Thyme’s natural properties can help combat cavity-causing bacteria and provide relief.

#10: Toothache Plant

The aptly named toothache plant contains spilanthol, an anti-inflammatory compound. Chewing the plant creates a numbing sensation that can provide relief from toothache pain. While generally safe, avoid its use if you are allergic to plants in the daisy family, are pregnant, consume alcohol, use diuretics, or have prostate cancer.
